Link Building for AI Search Runs Through Creators

AI & Search Strategy / AEO Series

Link building for AI search already exists. It’s called influencer marketing.

Every SEO team eventually asks the same question about AI search: rankings became citations, fine, so what’s the new link building? The answer has been sitting in plain sight for years. It just lives in a discipline most SEO teams have never run.

Link building for AI search is the off-page work of earning third-party endorsements that answer engines read when they decide which brands to cite. For twenty years the endorsement that mattered was a backlink: another site putting its credibility behind yours with a link. Engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews still need outside parties to vouch for you, because your own claims about yourself tell them nothing. But the unit they read changed. It’s no longer the link. It’s the citation, and the sources getting cited are overwhelmingly independent creators with real authority in their categories. Which means the discipline that earns the endorsement changed too. The new link building is a creator program. If you’ve spent a career in SEO, you already have most of the skills. You’ve just been pointing them at the wrong target since the answers started arriving above the links.

Do backlinks still matter for AI search?

Backlinks worked because they were independent endorsements, and AI citations work the same way

PageRank won because it solved the oldest problem in advertising with math. Every website says it’s the best. So Google ignored what sites said about themselves and counted who vouched for whom. A link was a small act of staked credibility: I’m sending my readers to you, and if you’re garbage, that’s on me. Whole careers were built on earning those endorsements. Outreach, digital PR, guest posting, the works.

Answer engines inherited the exact same problem and solved it the exact same way, one layer up. When ChatGPT or an AI Overview decides which project management tool to recommend to a five-person agency, it can’t learn anything from fifty product pages that all say “we’re the best.” So it reads what independent voices say. Reviewers. Communities. And more than anything else, creators who’ve spent years in a category and have an audience holding them accountable for their judgment. YouTube alone takes roughly 30% of the citations in Google’s AI Overviews. The vouching didn’t go away. It moved from the hyperlink to the human voice, and I’ve written up the full mechanism in why AI cites creator content if you want it.

A backlink was a site staking its credibility on yours. A creator citation is a person doing it, on camera, with an audience watching. The machine reads both the same way: somebody else vouched.

How is influencer marketing like link building?

If you come from SEO, you don’t need a new mental model. You need a translation table, because every link building concept has a citation building twin. Here’s the mapping we use when we walk SEO teams through their first creator program.

Link building (SEO)
Citation building (AEO)
The backlink. A third-party site vouches for yours with a link.
The creator citation. An independent voice vouches for your brand in content engines read.
Domain authority. You evaluated whether a site’s link was worth earning.
Topical authority. You evaluate whether a creator’s body of work reads as expertise to the engines.
Anchor text. The words carrying the link shaped what it counted for.
Characterization. How the creator describes you shapes how the answer presents you.
Link velocity. Links begot links as authority accumulated.
Citation compounding. Engines lean on sources they’ve already trusted, so presence reinforces itself.
Dofollow vs nofollow. Not every link passed weight.
Cited vs mentioned. Being named in an answer and being its source are different prizes.
Digital PR budget. Money spent earning coverage that links.
Creator program budget. The same money, earning voices that get read for years.

Can you game AI citations the way people gamed backlinks?

Scripted creator content is the private blog network of AI search

People will try. They tried with links, and the spam history tells you exactly how this ends. Link building had a degenerate form. Private blog networks, paid link farms, guest posts on sites nobody read. All of it was the same con: manufacturing the appearance of independent endorsement without the independence. Google spent two decades learning to discount it, and the people who built on it watched their rankings evaporate.

Citation building has the identical failure mode already. Hand a creator a script, force your approved messaging into their mouth, and you’ve built a PBN with a face. The content stops sounding like the creator and starts sounding like you, which turns it back into self-description, the one thing engines are engineered to ignore. This is why the briefing craft matters so much. You structure the text layer so the machine can read it (the specifics live in YouTube AEO), and you leave the judgment alone. Anyone who lived through Penguin already understands this in their bones. The endorsement only counts if it’s real.

How do SEO skills transfer to answer engine optimization?

More than you’d think. The evaluation instinct transfers: an SEO who could look at a domain and judge whether its link was worth pursuing can learn to look at a creator’s channel and judge whether four years of category coverage reads as authority. The outreach muscle transfers. The editorial judgment about what earns coverage transfers. Even the patience transfers, because citations compound on the same slow curve links did.

What can’t carry you the whole way is the tooling built around the old unit. The platforms writing AEO explainers will point you toward on-page fixes, because on-page is what their software can measure. And on-page work matters, but there’s a limit to it. You can load a site up with schema until it stops feeling organic, and how will Google treat that? We don’t know. With each update, Google tells us it’s heading in a new direction. What doesn’t change direction is the thing the engines were built to find: independent voices vouching for you. That’s the durable asset, and it’s the one no rank tracker can build. We run this discipline on our own domain first. The full program design is in how to get your brand cited by AI, the measurement protocol is in how to measure AI search visibility, and the strategic overview sits in the AEO influencer marketing pillar.

Why does creator content get more views than a brand’s website?

When a brand asks me why a creator’s word counts more than their own website, I point to views. Tell me how many views your website gets in a month. Now tell me how many views the creators in your category get relative to it. In most cases the creator world generates far superior outcomes, and the gap isn’t close. Last week one of our creators passed twenty-one million views on a single post he made about Jell-O. The brand behind that product is a large conglomerate, and I’d guarantee their website hasn’t done twenty-one million views on one page in a year, much less a week.

Now, one honest distinction. Not every one of those views happens where a machine can read it. TikTok and Instagram are still mostly walled off from the engines; YouTube is wide open, and it’s Google property. So the views tell you where the audience went, and the platform mix tells you how much of that attention becomes machine-readable. Attention already moved to the creators. The engines follow it wherever the content is open enough to read, which is why the platform mix in a creator program is an AEO decision, not just a reach decision.

Where to start if you run SEO for a brand

Run your ten most important buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews this week. Log every source cited. That log is your new link profile audit, and for most brands it’s an uncomfortable read: the citations in your category already belong to someone, and they’re mostly creators. Then treat what you find the way you’d treat a competitor’s backlink gap. Figure out whose voices carry the category, and go earn your own.

Frequently asked questions

What is link building for AI search?

It’s the off-page work of earning third-party endorsements that answer engines read when deciding which brands to cite. In classic SEO, that endorsement was a backlink: another site vouching for yours with a link. In AI search, the endorsement is a creator citation: an independent voice with real authority in your category discussing your product in content the engines read, especially YouTube video. The function is identical. A machine needs outside parties to vouch for you because your own claims about yourself carry no weight. Only the unit changed, from the link to the citation, which means the discipline that produces it changed too: from outreach for links to creator partnerships.

Do backlinks still matter for AI search?

Yes, but they’ve been demoted from the main event to a supporting signal. Backlinks still feed the authority calculations underneath AI retrieval, and a site with no link profile will struggle to be resolved as a credible entity at all. What backlinks can no longer do is put you inside the answer. Answer engines cite the sources that discuss you, and those sources are overwhelmingly independent voices: reviewers, communities, and creators with topical depth. A brand can hold a strong link profile and still be absent from every AI answer in its category, because nobody credible is saying anything about it in the places the engines read.

What replaces the link building budget in an AEO strategy?

Creator programs, selected and briefed for citation value. The money that used to fund guest posts, digital PR campaigns, and link outreach buys more visibility when it funds partnerships with creators who hold sustained topical authority, publishing in durable formats the engines read for years. YouTube leads that list, since it takes roughly 30% of the citations in Google’s AI Overviews. The evaluation skills transfer almost one to one. An SEO who can judge whether a domain is worth a link can learn to judge whether a creator’s body of work is worth a citation. The outreach muscle transfers too. What changes is the target.

How is influencer marketing like link building?

Both earn the same thing: a third party putting its credibility behind your brand in a form machines can read. The parallels run deep. Domain authority maps to a creator’s topical authority. Anchor text maps to how a creator characterizes you when they mention you. Link velocity maps to the way citations compound as engines lean on sources they already trust. Even the spam story repeats: private blog networks and paid link farms were the degenerate form of link building, and scripted brand messaging in a creator’s mouth is the degenerate form of citation building. Engines discount both for the same reason. The endorsement stopped being independent.

What is Citation Building?

Citation Building is Searchlight Social’s term for the off-page discipline of AI search: earning citations in AI-generated answers through partnerships with independent creators who hold topical authority. It’s the successor to link building. The work involves auditing which sources engines currently cite in your category, selecting creators whose body of work reads as authority, briefing for machine-readability without scripting the creator’s judgment, and tracking citation share over time. Where link building earned its endorsements page by page, Citation Building earns them voice by voice, and the assets it produces keep working for years because engines re-read durable creator content continuously.
