How to Measure AI Search Visibility for Your Brand

AI & Search Strategy / AEO Series

You can’t rank in AI search. You can only be cited. Here is how to measure AI search visibility properly.

The rank report ran the search industry for twenty years. AI answers have no positions to report, which is why most brands can’t say whether they exist in the channel their buyers now use first. The measurement discipline exists. This is it.

Measuring AI search visibility means answering one question on a schedule: when buyers ask the engines about your category, are you in the answer? The method is prompt sampling: a fixed set of buyer questions, run across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews at consistent intervals, with every answer scored for whether your brand is mentioned, whether it is cited, which sources carry the mention, and how you are characterized. The output is a single trend line we call Share of AI Voice: the percentage of category answers you appear in. It’s the successor to the rank report, and for a growing share of buyer journeys it’s the only visibility number that describes what buyers really see.

Why can’t you track rankings in AI search?

No positions, no fixed page, no shared result: the three breaks with rank tracking

Rank tracking worked because search results were positional, stable enough to sample, and identical enough across users to generalize. AI answers break all three properties: there is no position inside a synthesized paragraph, answers vary between runs and users, and the engines update continuously. Brands respond to this in one of two bad ways: declaring the channel unmeasurable and ignoring it, or screenshotting a single flattering ChatGPT answer and calling it strategy.

The correct response is the one statisticians apply to any variable surface: stop treating single observations as findings and start sampling. AI answers are variable, but they aren’t random. Large-scale citation studies find stable, repeatable patterns in which sources engines lean on. Sampled consistently, they show stable patterns in who gets mentioned, who gets cited, and which sources the engines lean on. It’s the same way a music producer listens to a rough mix. Any single playback tells you almost nothing; play it in ten rooms and the pattern of what’s working becomes unmistakable. Variability is a sampling problem, not a measurement impossibility.

One AI answer is an anecdote. Forty buyer questions, sampled monthly across three engines, is a visibility report. The trend line it produces is the new rank report.

How do you measure AI search visibility? The Share of AI Voice protocol

01

Build the question set from real buyer language, not keyword tools

Thirty to fifty questions a buyer in your category asks before purchasing: the comparisons, the “best X for Y” queries, the problem descriptions. Pull them from sales calls, support tickets, and community threads rather than keyword tools, because buyers phrase questions to AI conversationally. Keep a stable core for comparability; revisit the set quarterly as language evolves.

02

Sample on a schedule across the engines your buyers use

Run the full set through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews monthly at minimum, with multiple runs per question, because answers vary. This is Prompt Sampling: the discipline that turns a variable surface into a measurable one. Consistency of protocol matters more than sophistication of tooling; a spreadsheet maintained monthly beats an abandoned dashboard.

03

Score every answer on four dimensions: mention, citation, source, characterization

Is your brand named in the answer? Is it cited as a source or linked? Which third-party sources (creator videos, reviews, communities) carry the mention? And how is the brand characterized: recommended, listed neutrally, or caveated? The source dimension is where creator strategy meets measurement: it shows exactly whose authority your presence rests on.

04

Compute Share of AI Voice and track it as the primary KPI

Mentions divided by tracked answers, per engine and blended. Twelve mentions across forty tracked answers is a 30% Share of AI Voice. Track it quarterly alongside the citation log, and the number does what rankings used to do: it gives leadership a budgetable, trendable measure of whether the brand exists where buyers are looking.

05

Trace the business impact through branded search lift and assisted paths

Buyers who meet a brand in an AI answer frequently search it by name next, so branded query volume rising alongside Share of AI Voice is the channel’s clearest downstream trace. Add direct traffic to cited pages, assisted conversions, and “where did you hear about us” with AI assistants as an explicit option. The attribution is correlational, exactly as brand advertising has always been, and pretending otherwise is how channels get mismeasured.

Can you track which creator content AI engines cite?

The creator feedback loop: measurement that improves the program that moves the metric

The source dimension of the protocol produces the most strategically valuable artifact in AI-era marketing: a log of which creator content the engines in your category cite. Over quarters, it shows which partnerships produced durable citation assets, which formats your category’s engines favor, and, read competitively, the creators whose authority your rivals’ presence is built on. That evidence feeds directly back into the Topical Authority Selection and Citation-Worthy Briefs of the next campaign cycle, closing the loop between measurement and program design. The mechanism it measures is the one described across this series: engines cite independent authority, expressed through machine-readable formats.

The honest caveats, stated up front

Personalization means your samples aren’t identical to any individual buyer’s answers. The trend is valid; the specific answer isn’t a promise. Engines change behavior without notice, so protocol consistency matters more than any single quarter’s move. And Share of AI Voice measures presence, not sales. It belongs beside conversion metrics, not in place of them. Measurement claims beyond this are vendors selling certainty the channel does not offer.

Frequently asked questions

How do you measure AI search visibility?

Through structured prompt sampling: define the set of questions your buyers ask, run them on a fixed schedule across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, and record for each answer whether your brand is mentioned, whether it is cited as a source, which third-party sources carry the mention, and how you are characterized. Scored consistently over time, this produces your Share of AI Voice: the percentage of category answers in which your brand appears. It’s the AI-search equivalent of a rank report, with presence in answers as the unit instead of position on a page.

What is Share of AI Voice?

Share of AI Voice is Searchlight Social’s metric for a brand’s presence in AI-generated answers: the percentage of a defined category question set in which the brand is mentioned or cited, measured across engines on a consistent schedule. A brand with mentions in 12 of 40 tracked answers holds a 30% Share of AI Voice. Tracked quarterly, it shows whether creator programs and content investments are moving the brand into the citation sets that now mediate buyer discovery, and gives leadership a budgetable number for the channel.

What is prompt sampling?

Prompt sampling is the measurement method behind AI visibility tracking: running a fixed, representative set of buyer questions through answer engines on a consistent schedule, with multiple runs per question, and scoring each answer for mentions, citations, sources, and sentiment. Because AI responses vary between runs, single queries prove nothing. The discipline is in the sampling. Treated this way, AI answers become a measurable surface with trend lines rather than anecdotes about what ChatGPT said once.

Can you track which creator content AI engines cite?

Yes, citation recording is part of the sampling protocol. When an engine cites sources, log them: which are creator content, which creators, which platforms, which specific videos. Over quarters this reveals which partnerships produce durable citation assets and which formats your category’s engines favor, evidence that feeds directly back into creator selection and brief design. It also maps the competitive picture: the creators cited for your competitors show whose authority your category’s answers are built on.

What downstream metrics confirm AI visibility is producing business results?

Branded search lift is the primary trace: buyers who meet a brand inside an AI answer frequently search it by name next, so branded query volume rising alongside Share of AI Voice indicates real demand. Add direct and organic traffic to cited pages, assisted conversions on those paths, and self-reported attribution with AI assistants as an explicit answer option. The attribution is correlational, exactly as brand advertising has always been, and saying so plainly is part of measuring the channel correctly.
